Chapter Sixteen

The wind shifted around them as they rode. It had blown from the east, but now came from the south, buffeting them with warmer air. The scent of snow faded, leaving only the scents of grass, river, mountain and Mariska.

They’d ridden side by side for nearly two hours, Cody urging the mares up into a traveling pace, but not allowing the woman her reins back. He liked keeping her close—it made it easier to talk.

“What about your sister?”

The wolf’s sulking anger in the back of his mind surged at the question about Scarlett. He’d skirted most of the stories involving her, preferring to talk about his brothers. The subject of Scarlett, a raw wound for weeks, had healed over. But the skin was fresh, sensitive and the wolf didn’t want to share his mate with her.

Not our mate. The thought was a damn mantra now. Scarlett was his sister.

Mate.

Sister.

So it went, back and forth. The wolf couldn’t seem to let go and Cody was at a loss for how to explain that they could love her dearly and care for her, that they always would, but she was not for them and never would be. The wolf didn’t believe that. They’d left the Flying K to die, mateless and alone.

Not alone.

The relief offered by Kid’s earlier words seemed to have worn away, leaving Cody and his wolf in contention for this conversation.

He would have to choose his words carefully.

“Scarlett’s married.” Married. He elongated the word for the wolf.

“You were displeased with the husband your father chose for her?”

A bark of laughter exploded out of him. The sound startled all three of them, but the wolf’s snort echoed Cody’s humor at the thought. No one told Scarlett what to do.

“Quanto approved because it made Scarlett happy, but she found her own husband. Well, actually, he found her.” Cody sighed.

There really was no way to soften this tale. “We robbed the bank in Dorado, but the Marshal caught us before Scarlett got out. When the guns started waving, we bolted town. Rudy failed to mention the Marshal was inside when he left her there. We intended to come back, but our pursuers were determined and we kept driving further and further away.”

“What did the Marshal do with her?”

Cody shifted in the saddle, firming his grip on the wolf who inched closer and closer to the surface. “He arrested her. But the town wanted to hang her and rather than let them lynch her, he took her to his family’s ranch. They put her up as a guest. But it took us days to lose our pursuers.” Lose. Pay them off.

Kid’s determination and ability to track us was annoying.

Could tracking be his gift? Was he like Ike? Ike who could find a needle in a haystack? Track dust in a storm?

He fell silent as he considered the thought. They’d never seen the same gifts repeated twice in their family save for Buck’s ability to dream walk. But he was Quanto’s blooded son, their similar talent seemed in keeping with that filial relationship.
